Q&A with our U14 QLD reps

We are incredibly proud that four of our young players competed at the National Championships in Brisbane, from Sunday, October 5th, to Saturday, October 11th 2025. Annie Patterson-Kane, Evie Phillips, Evie Lugert, and Nate Smith.

Annie, Evie P., and Evie L. teamed up together as part of the Embers team, while Nate was representing the Sabres. The Red Lion Club Captains took the opportunity to interview all four players in the lead-up to this major competition and are extreemly proud to report that Nate and his team came away with SILVER and Annie, Evie and Evie came away with GOLD! an absolutely amazing achievement.

Annie Patterson-Kane

Q: What are you looking forward to about nationals?

I am really looking forward to challenging myself and being able to put together everything I have been learning this year on the big stage. I am also really excited to meet and get to play with girls from across Queensland.

Q: What position are you likely to play?

I will be playing a centre defender position.

Q: Do you have any goals for the tournament?

My main goals for the tournament are to play strong, sound hockey and be reliable at the back. I also want to use the skills I have learnt recently and be making good decisions in each game.

Q: How long have you been playing hockey?

6 years

Q: What club teams did you play in this year?

I played in under 14’s red, J1 and A2 grey

Q: What made playing for Red Lion enjoyable?

I find that the club culture is something that makes playing for the club so enjoyable. Everyone shows up to games and gives 100% whilst still having a laugh. This allows you to have fun with them whilst also trying your best. This is something I really love about red lions!

Q: What have you enjoyed most about your 2025 Red Lion season?

This year with Lions I have had the opportunity to play alongside some people that I admire and respect as players and people. I have had the opportunity to grow this year and this would not have happened without the support of the club.

Q: Do you have any team mates or coaches that you want to give a shout out to? How have they helped you over the years?

There are so many! I came to Red Lion only a year ago, as a boarder at Glennie . Hockey had always been a family sport, and all of a sudden, I was alone at a new club, my family 6 hours away, not knowing anyone. All of my U14 teammates accepted the new girl from NSW, and I could not be more grateful to them and their families. A special thank you to the Lugerts , Downs and Cussons families, as well as Morgs, for all the lifts to and from training and games. But my biggest shoutout is to Heidi Phillips—she has mentored, coached, taxied, and often parented me over the last two years. Thanks to her support, the Red Lion community and my coaches, I’ve been able to achieve something that has always been a goal.

Evie Phillips
